It's that time of year when many families are preparing for exotic getaways. If you need travel vaccines before your trip, here are some things you should know:
-Get your vaccines early! Most clinics offering travel vaccinations recommend an appointment 6-8 weeks prior to your departure. This is because your body needs time to build immunity, and some vaccines are provided in a series that can take time to complete.
-Most health insurance does not cover travel vaccinations, so be prepared to pay during your visit.
-Check your immunization records to see if you have already had Hep A/Hep B vaccinations so that you don't have to repeat them. If you don't have your childhood vaccine records, visit your local health department to see if your vaccine records were entered into IRIS - Iowa's immunization registry.
