No, the Sheriff's Office does not have local weather information. Calling the Sheriff's Office during bad weather ties up the phone lines and dispatchers during peak times during which emergencies occur. Your call may be preventing someone else from receiving emergency assistance as quickly as possible. Listen to your local radio stations or call 511 for weather/road/travel information.

How can I find out about getting a concealed weapon permit?
Dallas County Citizens may apply for a concealed weapon permit between the hours of 8:00 AM and 4:00 PM Monday thru Friday. Applicants must be 21 years of age, a U.S. citizen and submit to a criminal history check. A conviction for certain crimes can be cause for denial of a permit. Applicants are required to complete a gun safety course prior to issuance. Additional information regarding gun safety courses can be obtainted by contacting our office. Concealed weapon permit fees are $50.00 for a paper permit or $55.00 for the hard card option.

Applicants must be 21 years of age, a U.S. citizen and submit to a criminal history check. A conviction for certain crimes can be cause for denial of a permit. Upon approval, applicants must pay a $10.00 fee. Applicants are allowed to take permit with them but the permit will not be valid for three days per federal law.
We have a problem with speeders in our neighborhood. What can I do about it?
The Dallas County Sheriff’s Office has a speed trailer available that can be placed in your area that digitally displays vehicle speed to drivers. This is very often a helpful deterrent. You may also request that this area be placed on selective enforcement.
Someone has abandoned a junk car in my parking lot or on my property. Can the Sheriff's Office tow it away for me?
The Sheriff's Office can only have vehicles towed that are on public property. Call a wrecker service in your area and the vehicle will be towed away at no expense to you. The wrecker service will notify the owners once they have determined ownership.
Can Deputies open my car if I lock my keys inside?
Because of the potential for damage to vehicles the Sheriff's Office does not open locked vehicles. A locksmith is your best alternative. However, if a child has locked himself in a vehicle this is a true emergency and the Sheriff's Office and / or Fire Department will respond and open the vehicle any way possible, even by breaking out the window if necessary.
I have left my spouse and am living elsewhere, but I need to get my clothing and other items. Can the Sheriff's Office help me?
The Sheriff's Office will send a Deputy to keep the peace and prevent violence while you retrieve your belongings if you are in possession of a court order stating that Sheriff’s Deputies are to accompany you.
Can I get a copy of my driving record?
Our office is not authorized to release your driving record. Contact the Department of Motor Vehicle Division at 100 Euclid Avenue in Des Moines located in the Park Fair Mall.
How can I check someone's background?
Complete criminal history checks are done through the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI). You may request the required DCI form at the Dallas County Sheriff’s administration office during office hours or contact the DCI directly at:

These forms are mailed by requestor directly to the DCI. There is a $13.00 charge for each name request.
How do I get a copy of a report?
The records department is open from 8:00 am until 4:30 pm, Monday through Friday. There is a $5.00 fee for copies of reports. Requests can be handled by mail if you send a self addressed stamped envelope along with payment. For more information contact the Records Section at 515-993-4771.
