 Notice - Changes in the Application Process Effective January 1, 2018 

Weapon Permits applications must be submitted online with the option to pay using a credit/debit card and requires a valid email address.  For those of you without online access there is a computer kiosk in the lobby of the Sheriff’s Office available for public use. All applicants will be require to upload the required documentation that is listed on the application.  If you are unable to upload the required documentation, please bring them to the Dallas County Sheriff’s Office located at 201 Nile Kinnick Dr. N., Adel, Iowa 50003 during application hours.  Permits will not be approved until we have the required documents.  

A processing fee and convenience fee for all credit / debit card orders will be charged.  Cash payment is accepted if you use the computer kiosk at the Dallas County Sheriff’s Office. 

How Do I Obtain a Permit to Carry A Weapon?

For those without online access there is a computer kiosk in the lobby of the Dallas County Sheriff’s Office available for public use.
All orders require a valid email address to communicate the status of your order. You will be notified via email whether your application has been approved or denied.

Effective July 1, 2017, a new permit to carry requires a fee of $50.00 and a valid driver’s license or non-operator I.D. that contains your photograph and current address issued by the Iowa Department of Transportation.  The permits are valid for five years from the date of issue. If the permit is denied, $45.00 will be reimbursed to the applicant.  The Sheriff’s Office will retain the remainder for processing and handling of the application.

The renewal of your permit to carry requires a fee of $25.00 and a valid driver’s license or non-operator I.D. that contains your photograph and current address issued by the Iowa Department of Transportation.  The permits are valid for five years from the date of issue.  If the renewal is denied, $10.00 will be reimbursed to the applicant.  The Sheriff’s Office will retain the remainder for processing and handling of the application. 

Renewal applications must be submitted and received by the Sheriff's Office no sooner than 30 days before and no later than 30 days after expiration.  Failure to do so may leave the permit holder without a valid permit and will require a new application. All orders require a valid email address to communicate the status of your order.  You will be notified via email whether your application has been approved or denied.

A permit to acquire weapons requires a fee of $10.00 and a valid driver’s license or non-operator I.D. that contains your photograph and current address issued by the Iowa Department of Transportation.  Effective July 1, 2017, the Permit to Acquire will be valid for 5 years.  If the permit is denied, $5.00 will be reimbursed to the applicant.  The Sheriff’s Office will retain the remainder for processing and handling of the application.
