Dallas County Treasurer – Motor Vehicle and Tax Departments reopen for appointments

Adel - Dallas County Treasurer Mitch Hambleton announced today a phased in reopening plan for Motor Vehicle and Property Tax transactions.  Hambleton stated:  “Beginning today, Dallas County residents will be able to schedule a next-day appointment for motor vehicle and trailer title transfers, out of state move-in’s and specialty plate pick-ups.  We will continue to require registration renewals to be done on-line, by mail or by dropping payment in the Courthouse drop box.  Appointments will be available Monday through Friday between the hours of 8:00 am and 12:00 pm.  Individuals will need to call 515-993-5812 between the hours of 1:00 pm and 4:00 pm to book an appointment for the next business day.  While the Governor recently extended the emergency proclamation through June 25th for Motor Vehicle and Tax payment deadlines, we understand that most people who’ve bought or sold something in the past 2 months are anxious to get their transactions taken care of as soon as possible.”

Hambleton continued:  “The Treasurer’s Office staff has been busy since the initial proclamation on March 17th handling mail-in, on-line and drop-off items.  To assist the public better, our phone lines will be turned off outside the 1:00 to 4:00 pm time frames to allow us to devote our entire staff to transacting business for those with appointments.”

“We’re anxious to get back to whatever “normal” will be.  We strongly encourage the public to wear facial covering in the Courthouse, have installed Plexiglas between staff and customers, limit their visit to 1 individual per transaction and have marked social distancing areas on the floor.  We can serve 8 individuals simultaneously and can safely have an additional 6 persons waiting outside our doors but inside the Courthouse.  It is probable that there will be times that the public will not be allowed to enter the Courthouse until there is space for them safely to do so.”

“I anticipate that appointments will be a way of life for the foreseeable future.  We realize that it is kind of a pain to make an appointment for everything, but the upside is that, with the appointment, we should be able to serve you on a timelier basis.  We will be modifying our processes going forward and will add an on-line appointment scheduling capability with text message notification over the course of the next month.”

Driver’s license issuance in Dallas County is transacted by the State Department of Transportation (DOT).  The Dallas County Treasurer’s Office is not able to answer any questions related to Driver’s License appointments, requirements or any other driver’s license matter.  There is a DOT Driver’s Issuance station located in Waukee.  All Drivers License questions should be directed to the DOT.  The number for the Waukee DOT office is 515-452-0501.  The DOT number is quite often busy, but please continue to try.  The Treasurer’s Office staff is not able to assist you with driver’s license questions.
